Lyrics to Glad
This past week, I learnt by heart
The route from the airport to Charlie Gairdner
We didn't know how long he had
Until we did, then I tried to feel glad
'Cause he told me a nursery rhyme
Said, "We have fun, don't we?"
And I just smiled

And that felt like it was good enough for me
To have an innings of ninety-one years
Then to go so peacefully
That'd be good enough for me

The care would have killed ya anyway
A stubborn independent soul until the ambulance came
Still mowing our lawns 'til last summer
Still picking grapes on the Swan 'til one summer before

You left some shoes to fill, a couple chairs as well
A wad of cash in your bedside table and a few stories to tell
It hit me in the kitchen, I'd been fine all weekend
I couldn't look anyone in the eye and I sure couldn't pretend

That the fuss of the funeral
Would have made you shake your head
Still I think you'd have smiled
If you saw all the people who travelled for miles
Make it out to say their goodbyes
Old bloke in khaki with tears in his eyes
That'd be good enough for me
